"Buying ripe papayas is like trading in the stock market. Once the window is closed, it's closed."

My dad comes up with the most creative analogies.

Obviously, I inherit my weirdness from him.

Today I went shopping for an adhesive bra because my dress has a low back and I was completely amazed at how calmly I discussed the merits and costs of silicon versus fabric with the sales lady. In my hand was a box labeled Nu Bra and I wasn't even cracking up. Or sinking into the carpet.

Seriously, high school has hardened me.

I honestly think that asking Mr. Lee about an AP problem is more mortifying than bra-shopping.

Point illustrated.

If I were to describe myself in idiomatic platitudes, "The grass is greener on the other side" and "The grapes higher up are more sour" would be major players. But I suppose this is part of human nature. After all, we aren't perfect. That isn't an excuse though. As long as people don't allow these feelings to consume them, it's perfectly fine to experience them from time to time. Life is a medley of feelings, and suppressing the more villanous ones only makes the inevitable explosion much more injurious.

Too bad we can't all go through life like HL Mencken.

How nice it would be to live everyday with a jolly laugh and unaffected ease. "Failed precalcus quiz--but oh ho ho ho! I have more important issues to tackle! Those booboisies and yokels are in dire need of lampooning!" [Some more guffawing.]

The ability to move on without looking back is an admirable quality. Hopefully, it's not a congenital trait but an acquired characteristic. = I still have hope.

What wouldn't I give to rewind to the golden days of (attempting to) play Nintendo 64 with friends every weekend! I've lost contact with my favorite mustached fellow. The afternoon sun would filter in, and there were no worries of any nature. Just unadulterated joy. Panic came when one realized that "Holy! I only have 10 HP left!"

But now every potential source of entertainment is tainted by the ever present annoyances of academics and adolescent drama. Travelling to some far off place is probably the one thing that can relieve stress now. Taiwan provides me with a sense of liberation. The kind where you feel like streaking through the streets and shrieking at greatest lung capacity.

Oh. Good luck to everyone SATing tomorrow!

Random PostScript: What's the animated cyberdude for YahooMail doing during the signing in process? Here are my hypotheses: a) he is being electrocuted; b) he is going #1 (which I hope he isn't doing); c) ??

Any ideas?

Lily Allen [26 Feb 2007|05:13pm]
[ music | Lily Allen - "Smile" ]

I, who never listen to music of the English language, have discovered Lily Allen. OMG, I love her music!!! Her chipper melodies contradict the weird lyrics.

Warning: Her stuff is really random. But really good too! :3

First,"Smile"--http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=McT_P2bpkHY I love the bg music to this one the best, although the MV is a bit sadistic... (also comical though)

Here's "Alfie": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qRX57zprNdw
For some reason, the music sounds faintly similar to those Chinese children folk songs my sister used to listen to. Ohh! Or the Puff the Magic Dragon or the song with "Say say my playmate, come down and play with me..." The puppet reminds me of Chuckie. Ughh

If anyone could buy the cd for me from Best Buys, I'd gladly pay him/her back! :D :D

I absolutely, totally, utterly, undoubtedly, loathe asking for rides. It's so mortifying. Maybe it's because I'm so incompetent at the whole procedure.

Here's how it usually goes:

Me: (pathetically): Erm.. [so-and-so], would it be possible for you to give me a ride home?

Whenever I find myself repeating these lines, I feel as if I'm begging for meager grains of rice or some other necessary means of survival. I feel helpless and pitiful. And I really really don't like feeling that way.

It's like, "I'm geniunely sorry for barging in on your precious mother-daughter or father-son car-bonding time--I really am! But I need a ride home; please with a cherry-on-top! ;___;"

You can just imagine how awkward it is for me later in the car. I was never one for good small talk. Oh, I do try to think of intriguing and engaging topics for discussion. Unfortunately, most go flat within two minutes (max). Am I doing something wrong?? Is it something I'm not saying? Or perhaps I'm not supposed to be staring out the window? Do I say something witty? Does the silence mean I'm expected to pop out with something about school and the lovely weather?

Once again, very uncomfortable.

Geezzzzzzzz... I really should go to Milpitas High School--then I wouldn't have to get rides home from other people after track practice. Or else, develop awe-inspiring, dazzling conversational skills so that I'd be able to whip out hilarious and charming quotes and as a result, possibly have a consistent ride home from school.

Or, Resolution 3--I could threaten the AC Bus Transit into coming every five minutes and building a 217 stop by IHS.

These are all impossible dreams of a dreamer.

But since I'm already dreaming, why not throw also in the ability to leap effortlessly and gracefully over hurdles?

Thanks man.

A banana might have potassium, but... [01 Feb 2007|03:51pm]
[ mood | indescribable ]

Let's talk about the Orange.

I am very much intrigued by the Orange. A wall hides the wonderful burst of tanginess inside. Sure, peeling the skin is an undesirable and sometimes discouraging task, but the juicy goodness inside is always worth it. Unfortunately, I haven't quite mastered that step yet. I am painfully reminded of that fact whenever the Orange indifferently squirts juice into my eyes. I'm sure Wanda is better at peeling an orange.

I'd lost interest in Oranges over the summer and switched to the crispiness of apples, but Oranges are looking pretty damn good again. I find it ironic how this interest comes right after a chill has nearly devastated the orange crop in California.

Oranges remind me of the sun, laughter, and chlorine. I'd like to eat more oranges, even though they're expensive and I'm thrifty. The actual problem always comes back to my incompetence in peeling an Orange. "I just can't peel them!" That doesn't stop me from trying, and the aftermath always finds me looking utterly stupid.

Why can't an Orange talk? Then it could tell me how to peel the outside properly.

I've been feeling really exhausted lately. Well, actually, I'm okay in the morning. I'm at my most charming in Johns' Precalc and then the day sort of dies from there. In Art, I AM a zombie.

--

Anyhow, I was walking home from the 217 bus stop today and saw this sophomore who was going the other way (His name's Ronak, I think? I have horrible memory when it comes to remembering names) and so we stopped and chatted, as we usually do when we see each other in the neighborhood. According to him, a bunch of people are cheating on AP Bio tests this year--and ruining the "curve."

I'm starting to believe the rumors that Mr. Chan is teaching AP Bio next year. If I were Mrs. Anand, I certainly would feel discouraged if some students weren't demonstrating proper learning attitudes.

Why would anyone cheat on an AP Bio test anyways? The exams prepare students for the big shebang at the end. Cheating just reveals a person's lack of foresight; he or she is willing to sacrifice hard work and the long-term benefit for a short-term exhilaration. Also, there is nothing wonderful or academically praiseworthy about obtaining an excellent grade through surreptitious means. It just shows that a person is stupid and lazy. Individuals without integrity are the bane of society. Think about it. Students take dozens of medical exams in undergraduate and graduate school to demonstrate their knowledge. Would you feel confident having a physician who cheated his or her way through medical school? Obviously not! After all, what if the person accidentally prescribes the wrong dosage and inadvertently poisons you?--this, due to the fact that s(he) had no real clue as to what s(he) was doing and had cheated on the section of the test that covered proper dosages and the such?

Instead of shaking my fist and spewing profanity (which would be useless although self-gratifying)I will instead, quote Scarlett O'Hara--"Tomorrow is another day!"

:D Tea-time!

很可惜,no?

um. Have fun everybody! If you're ashamed by my broken Chinese, I apologize deeply. :D

As Cliche as this may sound... [11 Aug 2006|08:46pm]
The highlight of my summer came this evening in the form of these words:

"I sort of missed you"

Let's reenact the scene:

Phone: Ring a ling a ling

[Gigi picks up the phone]

Unknown Person: Hello? Does Gigi live here?

Me: This is she! [Inside thoughts: It can only be---]

Person: Hey Gigi! This is Calvin!

Me: Calvin!!!! [Oh wondrous little boy! One of my favorite students from Wisdom!]

[It gets even better]

[in a matter of fact tone that is characteristic of him] Calvin: I sort of missed you

. SWOON .

Gigi had melted down by this point. Seriously, there is NOTHING better in the world than hearing someone (kids make it sound EVEN BETTER) say that he/she misses you.

Definitely about to burst with happiness and sheer joy.

Anyhow, then he proceeded to tell me about his week and all of the Wisdom activities (most of them including assault on TAs ;) )...

He said "I sort of miss you" TWICE!!!! :D

Of course, I told him that I missed him too.

I don't think I've been so giddy in awhile. This beats chic pulp fiction.

Okay, I lied. But I couldn't resist.

You fit in with:
Humanism

Your ideals mostly resemble that of a Humanist. Although you do not have a lot of faith, you are devoted to making this world better, in the short time that you have to live. Humanists do not generally believe in an afterlife, and therefore, are committed to making the world a better place for themselves and future generations.

The sun's shining & the exotics are a-chirping [09 Feb 2006|03:48pm]
G'afternoon folks! Here's an update just because the weather's awesome today! :D :D It's like spring! The season's a wonderful combo of temperatures; it's a bit summer-like in the afternoon yet there's also that chilly cold in the wee hours of morning. And since I don't have allergies of any sorts, spring is the time for me!

Okay.. Before I can start in on any other particular subject, here's a little description of my mood: lethargic, "desiring a walk-ish," nostalgic, partially content and partially bewildered. One could put it as a medley of emotions.

Since there's really no specific point I want to address in here, this entry is going to be random things jogging in my mind:

-Happiness isn't normal. At least, that's an idea that TIME magazine discussed in one of its articles, in which reporters interviewed famous psychologist Steven Hayes. The piece talks about how pain is a part of life and that when people try to correct negative thoughts or even attempt to push them away, the process only leads to a type of obsessive suffering. Simply put: a quick "knife-through-butter" pain vs a long and painful unhappiness/suffering. Want more info? Read the article! Me gusta TIME! Deben leer TIME tambien! (excuse my rusty Espanol) Oh, you might also want to check out "Your Taboo, Not Mine" in the same issue. Definitely one of the best articles ever (only second to the fake Bush SOTU Address (<3 <3 <3) that Mr Lewis handed out)

-Isn't it weird how life doesn't work out quite the way one wishes it to? Here's a personal case.

From the beginning of March to around December of '05 (Yes, I keep track : P), I had this pseudo-infatuation with this guy from Chinese school who shalt not be named. So back then, when we had these Chinese group activity thingies, there'd always be the internal "Aw man!" when he sat on the opposite side of the table. But months pass, yadda yadda (you know the drift), Gigi finds a new celebrity obsession. However, I joined the same group this year because signups happened in November-- BEFORE I had "moved on." Anyhow, I found out that he didn't join this year because he was a senior now, and so there wasn't any incentive for him to participate in the group for college apps/extra curricular stuff .

But, in the lastest sessions (of this year thus far), he's been coming to the meeting place with his sister and mom--I think because he doesn't have another ride home from Chinese school--and waiting awhile before his dad picks him up. What's ironic is that he's been sitting next to me (probably because I sit next to his sister) while he's there. Me thinking: Man, if this were last year, there would be an internal fiesta right now, but since it isn't last year--well, whatever.

Yep. :P

-I like taking walks around the neighborhood. Especially on super nice days like today. Sometimes I go jogging around the area, which is relaxing. :] But it's rather embarrassing when I pass a "walker" and then overlap the person on the way back. It's like, err, Hi Again! I also love the smells that drift around while I walk around. They sort of remind me of Taiwan (yes, weird connection), which is partially bad because Taiwan smells like pollution, but also good because I like Taiwan and so the smell jogs my memory.

-Dude, swing music is groovy. It reminds me of time-travelling back to the early 1900s, when women had bob haircuts and jangly earrings, and when men wore black hats and leather shoes.

-I have problems remembering whether or not I've taken my antibiotics (for acne) or not. Hoho.

I really have nothing else to say, so so long! And despite what Dhananjay and Derek Lin say, get more sleep everybody! It's good for you! :D (And don't expect another update anytime soon)

While waiting for the school buses to arrive at Ohlone, a male freshman and his cronies are guffawing over heaven knows what, and one of them throws a semi-empty Pepsi bottle to the ground.

Me: [casting a deliberate evil eye over the boy] Know what I hate the most, Candice?

Candice: What?

Me: People that litter. I detest them.

Candice: [Smile]

[A few moments later, Trash-Boy picks up the bottle.]

Me: Know what else?

Candice: What?

Me: I just added a new requirement on my future husband Must-Haves.

Candice: Oh boy.

Me: He has to be Eco-friendly.

TGIF (hackneyed acronym) [07 Oct 2005|04:00pm]
[ music | Minna Daisuki Katamari--Meadowtronic (jazzy-trance-ish) ]

Greetings, fellow LJers!

Another one of chocoxcoin's sporadic updates. Since I don't update very often, I attempt to make each rare gem as sparkling as possible! (COUGHCOUGH LAME-O COUGH) And be happy! This entry does not consist of a heated rant--fine, maybe a few sentences.

1. Let's get the depressing whining over with in cuatro palabras:
Math. Outlaw brain freezes.

2. Danon (sp?) yogurt is good. Especially since it only has 90 calories and 12 g of sugar. No need to thank me for the nutrition facts.

3. For those of you (happily) wondering why I was absent yesterday, I was with my cool yearbook buddies yo! (actually, I don't know many of them very well but they're cool!) at the fall Herf Jones workshop in Oakland. My favorite part was the FOOD! Why did I like it so much? a) it was scrumptious! b)it was colorful! c)it was free! Basically, different types of sandwiches, salads, cookies, and pastry-like nibbles.

4. Homecoming: I am a self-proclaimed nitwit. A friend of mine(M) asked another friend (F) to the homecoming dance and she refused (only I didn't know because I was in Oakland on Thursday). Then I found out Male asked Female today and exaggeratedly/teasingly went, "How come no one told me? Hey _____ (the Female), are you buying a dress?" in front of the said Male Friend, completely oblivious to the dirty looks Female Friend was shooting me. "I'm sorry!" (drops into self-despair)

5. I'm working part-time starting next week!! =] At a daycare!! Let's hope the kiddos are kind to me. I mean, I used to go to an after-school thing, and I was brutal. Let us join in a crossing of fingers for Gigi.

6. "Chance" by UVERWORLD is an awesome song.

7. Last number. Actually, I should stop at #8, shouldn't I? (After all, 8 is luckier.) Isn't it just horribly torturous to like someone and know that there will never be the slightest chance of anything (even friendship)? Then, in a cold-turkey attempt to break off all thought of the said person, the protagonist still wonders about Direct Object during daily activies--i.e. the "buum," which is seriously not good timing on the protag.'s part. But, it could be worse.

8. Lucky number! Does Proactive work?

Here's this hilarious animation that my uncle sent to me from Taiwan. It's DARN, WOAH funny.

It's called "Bad English" or something like that. If you're Chinese, you'll definitely get it. There's a Taiwanese phrase in there though. But it has Chinese/English captions on the bottom.

"English No Good" animation" xD

Oh. And I'm Chinese/Taiwanese so I think I'm justified in posting it. Plus, it's all funny humor!

Happy 15th Claire [18 Aug 2005|01:02pm]
[ mood | chipper ]

You may owe this lovely update to Jaclyn and Claire.

As stated in the title (and if I'm correct), HAPPY BIRTHDAY CLAIRE! (Technically, it's already Aug. 19 in Taiwan, so I'm justified)

I made macaroni and cheese! Cheers. And it actually tastes good too--my sister ate two servings, and she's very nit-picky about food.

Before I leave, here's Gigi's 8/18 Pearls of Wisdom
    On Dissing a Person
  • If you must diss a person, do not diss him or her on appearances. Certain people are born with their physical characteristics and either a) do not possess the money to alter deformities or unpleasing features or b)have no way of changing how they look.
  • Same goes with parents. Don't diss a person through slamming his or her parents unless justified. It's rude to bad-mouth other people's parents and goes to show that the insulter doesn't have any smarter way of displaying his dislike.

I try to follow my own advice. =]

The start of a sweltering summer is accompanied by a.. [insert drumroll] new layout! Though the bg is slightly messed up and the scroll bar/text colors are too (due to the fact that I use Firefox instead of I.Explorer).

Whatever. I think I can live with a repeating background. (Okay, so I'm lazy!) But anyhow. I think my editing of images has somewhat improved compared to the horridness of past backgrounds. Oh right! I got the image from from Aethereality.net. Used some brushes too--but I forgot where they came from.

Right. Does anyone remember what the AP Bio workbook we had to get? It was by Martha Taylor, Version _?
If you remember, tell me!

Er. Going to LA tomorrow. YES!

Things that have happened in the last 3 days:

1. My dad pulled a young tomato plant which he thought was a weed.
2. I added a new group to my Dislike list: People who grab your food sample at Costco after you've been waiting there for ten minutes.
3. I watched Star Wars Ep. III
4. I went to Fanime and spent around $30.
5. I read DeathNote, an awesome manga.

....

Random note: My parents rarely let me buy shorts because they think the ones fashionable nowadays are too short or too low. Then yesterday at some Dim Sum place, I see two MID-AGE ASIAN women (30 +) wearing miniskirts and shorts and I'm like,".................."

Me: Mom, Dad! Look! They're HECKA older than me and they're wearing SHORTS that are INCHES shorter than mine!!!!

Mom & Dad: .... We don't care. You can wear whatever you like when you're older.

Me: ARGHORTHOWTU!

--The End--

The world is just extremely strange.
